The Supreme Yogi & Revered Founder

Bhagwan Sri Chand Ji Maharaj

Bhagwan Sri Chand Ji Maharaj — Founder of Udasin Sampradaya
Bhagwan Sri Chand Ji Maharaj
Founder · Udasin Sampradaya · 15th–16th Century
"Detached yet compassionate, silent yet full of wisdom — the eternal light of the Udasin path."

Bhagwan Sri Chand Ji, the eldest son of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, chose the supreme path of renunciation over worldly life. Born in 1494 CE, he founded the Udasin Sampradaya — a sacred order that blends Vedic wisdom, Yogic discipline, and devotion to the formless Divine.

The word Udasin means detached or neutral — embodying a spirit free from ego, attachment, and desire, yet rooted in compassion and service to all beings. His teachings form the spiritual bedrock of the Sivakanchi Udasin Bavaji Mutt.

Our Historical & Spiritual Background

Centuries of devotion, sacrifice, and sacred service — tracing the journey from Baba Sri Chand Ji to the Kanchipuram of today.

1

The Divine Foundations: Udasin Sampradaya

The foundational lineage of our Mutt traces back to the ancient Udasin Sampradaya, a celebrated ascetic order within the broader fabric of Sanatana Dharma. The order was revived in the 15th / 16th century by Bhagwan Sri Chand Ji, the eldest son of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Choosing a path of intense renunciation — Udasin translates to detached or neutral — Baba Sri Chand Ji established a philosophy that harmonized Vedic wisdom, yogic discipline, and a deep devotion to the formless Divine.

2

The Journey to Southern India

While the Udasi tradition historically flourished across Northern India, its profound spiritual influence traveled South during the 18th and 19th centuries. This migration was catalyzed by early spiritual journeys of Udasin saints and key historic shifts. Notably, during the reign of the Nizam of Hyderabad and the influential administration of Prime Minister Maharaja Chandu Lal — a devout patron of the Udasi order — Udasin Mahants expanded their footprints across the Southern peninsula. Monasteries were established to protect and propagate the timeless tenets of Vedic scriptures while establishing Sewa (selfless service) programs for the local populations.

3

Rooted in Kanchipuram: A Living Legacy

Established centuries ago, the Sivakanchi Udasin Bavaji Mutt acts as a crucial cultural and spiritual bridge. It explicitly unites the northern ascetic flavor of Baba Sri Chand Ji's teachings with the profound temple traditions and rich heritage of Kanchipuram. Through changing eras, British administrative shifts, and regional changes, the Mutt has firmly retained its spiritual identity.

4

The Lineage of Mahants

The spiritual seat of our Mutt has been preserved and protected through a strict lineage of Mahants (Madathipathis). Passing down through historic seers such as Mahant Basanthdoss Bavaji, the leadership today rests on the capable shoulders of Swami Karshni Anubhavanand. Under the current leadership, the Math functions not just as a center for personal introspection, but as an active hub for daily Vedic poojas, religious festivals, and community welfare initiatives.
